Bob Elgas is a naturalist who has gained world wide
renown for
his work with wild geese. As a naturalist, his studies have taken him to all forty-nine of
the continental United States, most of the Canadian Provinces and many foreign countries.
He has made numerous Arctic expeditions under the sponsorship of such organizations as
World Wildlife Fund, The International Council for Bird Preservation, The Smithsonian
Institute, the Department of the Interior and others. As a result of his research efforts,
the Tule White-Fronted Goose, in a release published by the American Museum of Natural
History was named Anser albifrons elgasi in his honor. He served as President of
the International Wild Waterfowl Association and has been active in many avicultural and
ornithological organizations.As an artist, Elgas' paintings have been shown in galleries throughout the United States and hang in collections in North America, Europe and Asia. He has won many awards in various national exhibits and is recognized for his portraits of birds. In addition to his years of work with wild geese, Cranes and similar birds, he also maintains an aviary, specializing in rare macaws and especially enjoys painting the different species of the Psittacine family. Birds, and painting them have been a major part of his life.
