...Katie Verna's Ecru version of the Blue Mat, taken from Ring of Tatters Newsletter No. 40, p. 38

tatted by Katie

Thread used: DMC Cordonnet Special Size 40, ecru.

Note: I found errors in the indication of reversing or not reversing the work; at least, if they weren't errors, they didn't work for me! My changes are in italics. - Katie

Abbreviations
p   = picot -   = short picot for joining
R   = ring -   = decorative picot
Ch   = chain +   = join
RW   = reverse work DNRW   = do not reverse work

Row 1:
*R: 3-3-3-3
Ch: 3-3-3-3-3-3**
Repeat from * to ** until 6 rings and chains.

[Note: if you want to get to the next row without cutting and tying, begin with a chain begun around a paper clip. Then you can make the last ring a split ring and proceed into the second row. I of course forgot about this as I began this piece so I used the no-bridge bridging suggestion in the IOLI Bulletin in Bobbie Demmer's column: simply load a yard of thread on a couple of shuttles and tat the chain from the beginning ring back to chain #5; bury the ends as you split-ring ring #6.]

Row 2:
*R: 3-3+(to middle p of ring of row 1)6 RW.
Ch: 3-3-3 RW.
R: 6+ (to same p as before)3-3 Do not reverse work (DNRW).
Ch: 6-6-6.
R: 3-3+(to 2nd p or first chain)3-3 DNRW.
Ch: 3-3-3-3-3+(to previous chain)3-3-3-3-3+(to previous chain) DNRW.
R: 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3 RW.
Ch: 6-6-6-6+(to centre p of last ring)6+(to previous chain)6 DNRW**.
Repeat from * to ** around mat.

Pattern: Round 2
designed and tatted by Skye

Note: This round *could* be very complex, since the main element is repeated and flipped back and forth several times. I tatted this round directionally, and if the directions are followed exactly, it's a very easy round. <g> - Skye

Additional Abbreviations
CTW   = continuous wind method RS   = reverse stitch (do 2nd hitch, then 1st hitch)
SH1   = shuttle 1 DR   = directional ring (make ring using RS)
SH2   = shuttle 2 RW   = reverse work
ShJ   = Shuttle join DNRW   = do not reverse work

SH1 Ch 3-3-3-3-3; ShJ to last p on prev ch; 3-3-3-3-3; ShJ to next p on prev ch. DNRW.
SH2 R 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3 Cl. RW.
